A realistic weekly cleaning schedule

A cleaning schedule should help you decide what matters today. Start with a few jobs that fit your household, then adjust the plan after a week.

Choose a manageable daily baseline

Pick two or three small jobs that prevent work building up: clear the dishes, wipe the kitchen worktop and put away items left in shared spaces. Allow around ten minutes as a starting point, then change that estimate to match your home. A busy day can have a smaller baseline.

Write down what “done” means. “Reset the kitchen” might mean dishes put away, worktops wiped and food returned to cupboards. A short checklist saves everyone having to guess.

TuesdayLaundryInclude drying, folding and putting away.

ThursdayKitchenCheck the fridge and clean the surfaces that need attention.

WeekendWeekly resetReview what is left and plan the next food shop.

This is a planning example, not a rule about how often every home needs cleaning. Adjust it for your space, available time and household needs. Follow product and appliance instructions for cleaning methods.

Assign the whole job

Choose one owner for each job, including noticing when it needs doing and gathering supplies. If two people share a task, agree which parts each person owns. Rotate less popular recurring chores if that works for everyone.

Keep shopping alongside the plan

When something runs low, add it to one shared shopping list. Include the quantity or pack size so the person shopping can choose the right item. Check the list before leaving home and mark purchases as bought as you go.

Review the schedule after a week

Ask which jobs were useful, which were too large and what you forgot to include. Move tasks that landed on busy days. A missed task is information about the plan, not a reason to abandon it.
